This is a 3-day course for teachers. It provides training in the universal
classroom based Incredible Years Child Dinosaur School Programme
and the underpinning classroom management principles. The Dinosaur School
programme employs strategies to promote children's non-aggressive ways to
solve common conflicts, appropriate classroom behaviours, and positive social
skills with other children and adults. The skills are taught through the use
of puppets, video examples and practice. It also includes small group activities
for the classroom and classroom and home assignments. The programme has been
demonstrated to improve children's social and emotional competence and to
enhance their abilities to do well in school and make and keep friends.
The Incredible Years Programmes for parents, children and teachers were developed
and researched by Prof. Webster-Stratton over the past 25 years, initially
they were developed as treatment programmes for referred children. More recently
Prof. Webster-Stratton has developed and researched the universal classroom
Dinosaur Programme, which is now being used by teachers in primary age classes
in Head Start communities in Seattle and in school across the UK.
The course tutor is Rhiain Gwyn.
Rhiain Gwyn is Headmistress of Ysgol Babnod, Coed Mawr, Bangor. She was the
first teacher in Wales to introduce the classroom Dinosaur School programme
and has delivered the programme for four years. She has also delivered the
teacher classroom management training to local teachers many times and is
now seconded by Gwynedd Education Department to support the introduction of
the Dinosaur School programme into all of the 106 primary schools in Gwynedd.
