Parent Programmes

There are a number of different three-day and one-day trainings. Three-day trainings are for the Infant/Toddler and Pre-school BASIC with a variety of one-day add-on courses (Infant; Toddler; School Age and Advance programmes) for people who have already trained in the Pre-school BASIC Parent Group Leader training.

The training for the Pre-school BASIC Parent programme is three days. The Pre-school BASIC Parenting programme (for parents of children aged 3-6 years) is designed to promote positive strategies and to assist parents in managing children's behaviour problems. This programme includes: play, helping children learn, positive reinforcement, limit setting, non-physical discipline alternatives, problem solving, effective communication skills and supporting children's education. Group therapy process issues such as empowering parents, collaborating, dealing with resistance, confronting and teaching, supporting and advocating for parents will be discussed. This intervention programme is used by professionals (therapists and parent educators from psychology, social work, education, nursing and psychiatry) who are working with families of young children with conduct problems (ages 0-12 years), or with single parents, abusive parents, and teenage parents. The workshop teaches how to use this programme as a prevention programme in elementary schools and pre-schools. This workshop covers the ages 2-8 years. Attending this workshop is the first step in becoming a certified group leader.
Cost: £450 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

In Wales we run an Infant and Toddler BASIC Parent training programme that trains people to deliver these two programmes. The training for the programme is three days. The Infant and Toddler Parent programmes (for parents of children aged 0-3 years) are based on the same principles as the other IY Parent programmes but are for parents of younger children. There are two programmes, the eight session Infant programme that focuses on the child’s first year of life and the twelve session Toddler programme that cover parenting toddlers aged 1-3 years. They both incorporate the key components of the other IY programmes which have proved so successful. These include discussion of the topics, viewing video clips to help parents identify key parenting principles, practice in the group and homework activities.

The Infant programme covers the first year of a baby’s life and is intended for parents and babies to attend together with practice exercises undertaken with the babies. The course emphasises interpreting babies cues, their physical social and emotional needs, an introduction to safety issues and discussion about common concerns around sleeping and weaning. As parents attend with their babies throughout the course it is recommended that the babies are not older than six months at the start of the course. Parents of older babies should attend the Toddler programme where some creche support is needed.

The Toddler programme is for parents of older babies and toddlers through to age three years. It is a twelve session programme that is similar to the original BASIC Parent programme and includes: child-led play, encouraging children’s learning through academic, social and emotional coaching, praise and incentives, handling separations and reunions, routines and schedules, and positive discipline practices such as redirecting, distracting and ignoring.

Group therapy process issues that are discussed during the course include empowering, collaborating with, supporting and advocating for parents.

This training is for professionals who work with families of young children (ages 0 - 3 years) and the programme is particularly designed to support young and/or vulnerable parents and families. The workshop teaches how to use the programmes as early preventive interventions. Attending this workshop is the first step in becoming a certified group leader in either the Infant or Toddler programme.                          THIS TRAINING IS FOR WELSH PARTICIPENTS ONLY.

Cost: £450 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

The training for the Infant Parent programme is a one day add-on course and participants MUST have undertaken the three-day Pre-school BASIC Parent Leader training prior to attending. These training days are offered as a participative supplement to the Pre-school BASIC leader training and will be helpful for leaders who are working towards leader certification. The one-day course introduces participants to some of the material from the Infant programme. During the training participants will have an opportunity to present parts of the programme and to obtain feedback and support in terms of their development of leader skills.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

From time to time we run one-day update days on the Toddler and Parent curriculum covering the social and emotional coaching material that has been developed for that programme and also added into the pre-school BASIC programme. This day is for people who did BASIC leader training prior to the publication of the toddler programme. The one-day course introduces participants to some of the material from the Toddler programme. During the training participants will have an opportunity to present parts of the programme and to obtain feedback and support in terms of their development of leader skills.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT).

There is a three-day School Age programme training not offered in Wales so we offer the one day add-on course and participants MUST have undertaken the three-day Pre-school BASIC Parent Leader training prior to attending. The recently revised School Age Parent Programme is based on the same principles as the BASIC Parent Programme for parents of younger children. It comprises a set of vignettes that are coded as suitable for 6 – 8 or 9 – 12 year old children.

Because children in this age range are likely to have well-established problems and also because they present greater challenges in terms of identifying rewards and implementing discipline plans, this training day is offered as a participative supplement to the Pre-school BASIC leader training. It will be helpful for leaders who are working towards leader certification.

This one-day course introduces participants to some of the material in the 12 session School Age programme. The course is available to people who have completed the BASIC group leader training and have had the experience of co-leading at least one Pre-school BASIC Parenting course.  During the day participants will have an opportunity to present parts of the programme and to obtain feedback and support in terms of their development of leader skills.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

The training for the ADVANCE Parent programme is a one day add-on course and participants MUST have undertaken the three-day Pre-school BASIC Parent Leader training prior to attending. The Incredible Years Advance Parenting programme is a follow-on to the BASIC Parenting Programme for parents of children who have clinical levels of conduct problems, are experiencing relationship difficulties with other adults and/or are in multiple stressed circumstances.
The Advance programme covers communication and interpersonal skills, including problem solving with adults and children, anger management and how to give and get support.
This one-day course will introduce participants to the content of the eight session Advance Parenting Programme and is for people who have completed the BASIC group leader training and have experience of co-leading at least one BASIC Parenting Course.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT).                                                                                                                                                                Registration Form

The training for the School Readiness programme is a one day stand alone course. This is a four-session programme designed for parents whose children are about to start, or have just started, school. Two sessions explore how parents can support children’s play as a learning activity and two sessions explore effective ways of introducing children to books. The programme uses all of the well-established tools for effective work with parents, including brainstorming and discussion, showing videos of parents and children, using practice activities during the sessions and encouraging parents to undertake home activities with their children.

The School Readiness programme is intended to be delivered in school with at least one of the leaders being school-based. This one-day training is for teachers, other education service staff and for other primary care staff in Wales who might be delivering the programme with school-based staff. Unlike the longer Parent programmes, training for this programme does not require the three-day BASIC leader training as a pre-requisite although this would also be useful. Staff are expected to be familiar with early learning principles and during the day will be introduced to the programme and shown how to adopt the collaborative principles that underpin the introduction of the material to parents.

It is hoped that schools will target the parents of children in nursery classes or when enrolling for reception classes.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

Consultation/Supervision Days for leaders delivering Parent programmes. All consultation/supervision days are open to anyone who has had the BASIC training in the Incredible Years programmes with the Incredible Years Wales Centre, and are delivering or planning to deliver the programme. Consultation/supervision days help to prepare for leader certification, and participants are encouraged to bring a dvd from a group session. These days are an opportunity for programme leaders to support one another and receive feedback to encourage their accreditation as programme leaders.

Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

Certification Workshops are designed to help participants prepare for leader certification. Leaders will be expected to bring a video-tape with them and have completed a Peer and Self Evaluation on the session. They will also have prepared part of the tape to show with specific goals for discussion in relation to the material shown.

In the 2011/12 year there is some funding available for the viewing of tapes, and leaders who show tapes that look likely to be passed for leader certification will be invited to submit them for assessment.

The day will also include preparation of material to be submitted to Seattle once the tape review has been successfully completed.

Child Programmes
Therapeutic Small Group Dinosaur School Leader training. This is a three-day training, and it is recommended, but not a pre-requisite, that participants have undertaken the BASIC Parent leader training, prior to undertaking this training.
This three day course provides basic training in delivering the Child Therapeutic "Dinosaur School" Programme. This programme employs strategies to promote children's non-aggressive ways to solve common conflicts, appropriate classroom behaviours, and positive social skills with other children and adults. The workshop will cover how to teach children to understand feelings, problem-solve, control of anger, learn how to teach children to be friendly, how to talk with friends, and how to do their best at school. The skills are taught through the use of puppets, video examples and practice The intervention programme is appropriate for use by clinicians with small groups of children with behaviour problems (from pre-school to eight years old). Attending this workshop is the first step in becoming a certified group leader. Ideally, participants will have already attended the BASIC Parent leader programme or the Teacher Classroom Management programme and will be familiar with the principles underpinning the Parenting programme.

Teacher Programme

Teacher Classroom Management Leader training.  This is a three-day course to train people to deliver the six-day teacher programme. Leader training for the three-day Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management Group Programme was offered for the first time in Bangor in 2005, following the successful training of many local teachers, and the adoption of the Teacher and linked "Dinosaur School" programmes by Gwynedd Education Department as part of their Primary School strategy. The programmes have received enthusiastic support from those teachers that have attended.
Teachers spend increasing amounts of their time managing children who display aggressive and non-compliant behaviours and who disrupt both their own and other children's academic progress. The course trains programme leaders to deliver the six-day Incredible Years Teacher Training Programme developed by Professor Webster-Stratton. The Teacher programme focuses on evidence-based practices and strategies that have been shown to reduce problem behaviour in the classroom and strengthen children's social, emotional and academic competencies. It is delivered over six days, ideally one month apart. Between sessions, teachers undertake classroom assignments and receive both verbal and written feedback on their efforts.

The three-day training course prepares leaders to deliver the Teacher programme. It introduces the content of the six-day programme and the collaborative teaching style which builds on teachers existing expertise. The training is open to education specialists with responsibility for/experience in training and supporting teachers of primary aged children or others with extensive experience in delivering the IY programmes. Course participants should ideally be familiar with the Teacher programme prior to the course and should be either an education specialist, a qualified primary school teacher with experience of the programme, or a certified Parent programme leader.

The teacher programme is linked to the IY Parent and Child programmes all of which promote positive and effective strategies to improve children's social competencies at school and at home. These programmes have been extensively researched and have been identified as 'blueprint' programmes, meeting the highest research criteria for violence prevention and the promotion of social and academic skills in young children.
Cost: £450 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

Evaluation Methods Workshops
People managing projects are increasingly being asked to “do an evaluation” of that project.  Many people are not sure what evaluation tools to use or how to analyse quantitative data.  This introductory one-day workshop will help give delegates more confidence in these areas.

This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning more about evaluation and is particularly applicable to staff managing or delivering services for parents and wanting to evaluate parenting programmes.

There are two workshops planned one in Bangor and the other in Cardiff.Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.

Dyadic-Parent Child Interaction Coding System - Revised (DPICS-R) & Teacher-Pupil Observation Training (T-POT)

This comprises two four-day courses for researchers, teachers and educationalists. The full programme will provide training in two observation-coding systems that have been used extensively to evaluate the effectiveness of the IY programmes both internationally and in Wales.

The first four-days will be dedicated to training attendees in the Dyadic Parent-Child Interaction Coding System - Revised (DPICS-R). After training to use all 37 parent-child categories, subsequent inter-observer reliability sessions will be held.

Between the first and second sessions of training we ask attendees to use the DPICS-R as often as possible in order to acquaint themselves fully with the coding system and to ensure that high levels of reliability are being attained.

The second four-day training will have two components. The first two-days will be spent checking that attendees are achieving acceptable levels of inter-observer reliability and are confident, and competent in using the DPICS-R system. During the final two days we will train attendees to be competent and reliable in using the T-POT classroom coding system. The T-POT was developed and validated by Dr. Pam Martin and makes use of many of the DPICS categories but also includes codes of direct relevance to the classroom situation.

It will be possible for people to enrol for the full eight days covering both DPICS and T-POT, or the six days of DPICS training. People who have previously trained in the DPICS may attend the second four-day training that includes two days of reliability training in the DPICS and the two-day T-POT training.

There is one workshop planned in Bangor. Cost for each four-day course: £500 (excluding VAT).

Service Managers' Workshops
This is a new WAG funded initiative to support the other IY training that is being disseminated across Wales. The days will be collaborative, skill sharing and problem solving workshops.

Places will be limited to ensure that all participants get an opportunity to receive feedback during the course of the day, and will be allocated in strict order of booking.  Places MUST be booked beforehand.

There are two workshops planned one in Bangor and the other in Cardiff.Cost: £175 (excluding VAT) or free under Welsh Government funding.
