Abstract:
The paper reports on the design of the Sure Start study
involving the parents of 'high risk' three and four year old children living
in low income families. The intervention was a randomised controlled study of
the BASIC Incredible Years parent programme using an intervention and waiting
list control design. It describes the intervention, the sample, the measures
selected and the rationale for their selection. Results from the baseline and
six month post-intervention follow-up of the two groups are presented. Based
on parental report the children demonstrated less problem behaviour at follow-up
one when compared to baseline measures and to the waiting list control group.
Parents also reported significantly improved mental health and parenting practices
as well as satisfaction with the intervention. These findings (Hutchings &
Bywater, in preparation) demonstrate the benefits of using an evidence-based
parenting programme in a community setting with 'high risk' pre-school children
in designated Sure Start areas. The findings provide evidence that
a targeted parenting intervention can prevent the risk of conduct disorder in
young children.
