Abstract:
This paper describes what has been learned over the
past 30 years about factors associated with the most effective parenting programmes.
It describes the reasons for choosing to develop the IY programmes in Wales
and provides an update on the current developments in Wales including the recent
decision of the Welsh Assembly Government to fund leader training in the IY
parenting programme from April 2006. The second half of the paper describes
the background to the North Wales Sure Start research programme and the way
in which fidelity was achieved. This study involved eleven Sure Start Centres
that already had staff, with basic leader training, who were delivering the
IY BASIC parent programme. Participating Centres agreed to:
o run groups for parent of high risk children recruited by local health visitors
o run the programme twice, first for the research group and six months later
for the comparison waiting list control group parents
o have all group sessions videotaped
o allow group leaders to come to Bangor for weekly supervision throughout the
delivery of the programme
As a result of these measures it was possible to have a randomised controlled
trial in which the programme was delivered with fidelity. The outcomes demonstrated
significant change in both parent and child behaviour as described in the next
paper.
