Title:
Randomised
trial of the Webster-Stratton Parenting Programme in Sure Start services in
Wales: Examining effects on parenting skills and predictors of child outcomes
Presented
by: Frances Gardner, University of Oxford.
Abstract:
This paper reports on the North Wales Sure Start study
by examining the effect of the IY group parenting programme, on intervention
and control group families, as assessed by the direct observation of parents
and children undertaken by independent observers in the home. It reports on
significant improvements in child behaviour and positive parenting skills for
intervention families. It goes on to explore the extent to which change in parenting
skills accounts for the improvements found in child problem behaviour, and whether
other factors contribute to intervention outcomes for children and families.
The discussion focuses on the importance of gathering independent and relatively
objective measures of outcome, through direct observation of child and parent
behaviour; and on what we can learn from these analyses about the active ingredients,
or mechanisms, underlying successful intervention, including why the intervention
works, and for whom (Gardner, Hutchings and Bywater, in preparation).
